Nokia Boosts Customer Experience with On-Demand Network Slicing

In an exciting development, Nokia, has unveiled a solution that promises to revolutionise the way Android smartphone users interact with their mobile networks. The company recently conducted a successful trial of an innovative on-demand network slicing solution, allowing Android 14 users to purchase and activate network slices directly from their operators. This move aims to empower end users and enhance their mobile experiences across a wide range of applications, including gaming, streaming, broadcasting, and social media.

With the introduction of on-demand network slicing, operators now have the opportunity to monetise 5G slicing services by offering premium network slices that can be purchased in specific areas based on customer demand. This new solution provides flexibility and customisation options, allowing network slices to be tailored to support specific use cases and different types of applications. By optimising network performance, quality, traffic routing, latency, and security, users can enjoy enhanced experiences that cater to their unique requirements.

The trial, which took place at Nokia’s network slicing development centre in Tampere, Finland, showcased the power of Nokia’s end-to-end slicing product portfolio. It incorporated essential elements such as the IMPACT entitlement and policy control servers, as well as the UE Route Selection Policy (URSP) technology implemented in Android 14. By leveraging the standard-compliant IMPACT entitlement server, network slice service availability is verified, and service packages are promoted to end users. Purchased service options are then sent to the operator Business Support System (BSS), which activates the selected dynamic network slice policy for the user using URSP. The trial also demonstrated slice interworking functionality between 4G and 5G, as well as dynamic radio resource allocation for different slices.

This groundbreaking solution opens up a world of possibilities for Android users. For instance, gamers can activate a dedicated network slice for local cloud gaming applications, ensuring enhanced network performance, low latency, and edge slicing capabilities. Sports enthusiasts attending events can enjoy a fast 5G streaming slice, granting them immediate access to video replays, additional content, and insights related to their favourite athletes and teams. Moreover, on-demand slices can be enabled in base stations serving concert arenas, further enhancing the overall mobile experience.

Nokia has established itself as an industry leader in 4G and 5G network slicing, being the first to implement slicing across Device-RAN-Transport-Core-Applications with management and assurance. This solution supports all 4G and 5G devices, enabling mobile operators to harness the power of a vast device ecosystem and leverage existing network assets such as spectrums and coverage.

Over the years, Nokia has carried out numerous live network deployments and trials with its global customer base. The company’s commitment to innovation is evident through its introduction of various slicing solutions, including network slicing for 5G Virtual Private Networks, Fixed Wireless Access slicing, Edge Slicing, Slicing for Applications, and Sliced Private Wireless. Additionally, Nokia offers Slice Management Automation, Assurance, and Orchestration, further enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of network slicing operations.

Ari Kynäslahti, Head of Strategy and Technology at Nokia Mobile Networks, said:

“This trial of the on-demand slicing solution for Android smartphone users is yet another step in our desire to support new monetisation opportunities for our operator partners. For mobile operators, slicing unlocks new 5G business opportunities with an opportunity to provide premium services and enhanced customer experience.”
