Nokia’s Site Solutions Elevate Power Performance in AirScale Deployments by up to 30%

Nokia, a leading telecommunications company, has introduced an expanded portfolio of energy-efficient site solutions designed to enhance its AirScale baseband portfolio. These innovative solutions offer significant power savings and environmental benefits, reducing energy consumption by up to 30%. With the introduction of pre-integrated cabinets and zero-footprint site solutions, Nokia aims to help mobile operators reduce costs, increase power efficiency, and contribute to sustainability goals.

Optimised Outdoor Solutions:

Nokia’s site solutions include an all-in-one cabinet solution and a zero-footprint site solution. The all-in-one cabinet solution features pre-integrated components, such as baseband units, cooling systems, rectifiers, and batteries. This modular cabinet design allows for easy deployment, streamlined maintenance, and improved reliability. Moreover, the zero-footprint site solution eliminates the need for air conditioning, leveraging natural outdoor temperatures to minimise energy consumption by up to 99%. This innovative approach also saves on-site rental costs and requires minimal space and installation time.

Benefits of Energy Efficiency:

By adopting Nokia’s site solutions, mobile operators can significantly reduce energy consumption and related costs. With network energy costs accounting for approximately half of operators’ expenses, optimising the radio access network (RAN) becomes crucial. Nokia’s solutions help slash energy bills by minimising the energy consumed by auxiliary components such as fans, cooling systems, lighting, and power supplies. As the RAN accounts for roughly 80% of mobile network energy consumption, these energy-efficient site solutions have a substantial impact on reducing carbon footprints.

Sustainability Commitment:

Nokia has set ambitious sustainability goals to reduce its environmental impact and assist its customers in doing the same. The company aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain (Scope 1, 2, and 3) by 50% between 2019 and 2030. By designing energy-efficient technology, Nokia actively contributes to the climate and environmental targets of mobile operators. The company’s commitment to sustainable practices extends to all areas of its business, ensuring a positive environmental impact.

Supporting Network Transformation:

With the exponential growth in mobile traffic and rising energy prices, mobile operators face increasing challenges in managing network energy costs. Nokia’s site solutions address these concerns by providing efficient load shifting and solar power support through its NetAct network management platform. These additional energy-saving features further optimise power consumption, helping operators achieve their network transformation goals.

Samir Kumar, Head of Mobile Network Services at Nokia, said:

Nokias expanded site solutions portfolio minimises the energy consumption and deployment costs for virtually every radio site deployment scenario. Increased energy expenditure is a pain point for mobile network operators and our solutions help reduce these costs as well as having a significant environmental impact. This is another example of our commitment to ensuring we act sustainably throughout every area of our business.”
